My name is Donna Newsom. I was born in Orlando, Florida, in 1961, and fell in love with art in kindergarten. I was able to attend the Art Institute of Dallas to study art and follow my dreams in 1980. While attending art school, I began to freelance as a product illustrator for newspaper ads. Upon graduation, my work as a commercial artist grew to include children's book illustrations and editorial illustrations for the Dallas Times Herald and various ad agencies in town.
I had grown up in Guatemala on the mission field with my family, and I received an invitation to return to Guatemala for a two year assignment illustrating primers and producing newsletters for literacy workers there from 1984-1986. When I returned to Dallas, I became very involved in advocating for political refugees from Central America and continued to pursue my career in advertising and marketing as a production artist / illustrator / art director for 23 years.
In 2010, I moved to Oklahoma to be near my aging parents, working various jobs from Muskogee to Tulsa. In 2013, I rediscovered my love of drawing and painting and did a couple watercolor portraits for my friends at the office. Now creating original drawings and paintings for people of dear family and beloved pets across the country has become my passion. I am also able to contribute custom portraits to raise funds for pet rescues in Tulsa and other cities. I would love to create a treasure for you.
